Despite years (decades?) of talk about paperless law offices, paper persists. We should applaud reduced paper (e.g., electronic court filings, PDF handouts of continuing legal education materials, and document storage and syncing services available across devices). But we also must acknowledge that people still exchange a lot of critical information on paper whether for reasons of convention, convenience, or compliance. And the more we engage with individuals as clients, the truer this fact is.
How should we handle situations where our clients receive important information because of convention (it’s always been on paper), convenience (everyone can get mail), or compliance (the statute requires it), especially when meeting clients elsewhere than your office?
